Two of
New York
's representatives in Congress are calling on the U.S. Army to approve a
two-year-old plan to boost high-tech commercial development in the Watervliet
Arsenal.
A
2005 Army commission report recommended a $64 million plan for business
development inside the arsenal that could add 1,500 jobs to the region's
economy. The plan calls for a local development corporation to have
control of the arsenal campus, with authority to turn it into a technology
business park integrated with the University at
Albany
's nanotechnology wing.
More
than two years later, the idea has yet to receive final military approval.
At a Tuesday press conference at the arsenal, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer
(D-N.Y.) and U.S. Rep. Michael McNulty (
D-Green
Island
) called on military leaders to OK the plan.
The
arsenal is the Army's only manufacturer of large-caliber cannons. Those
operations would continue under the Army commission's recommended plan.
More
than 20 companies already have operations at the arsenal, including M+W
Zander, Vistec
Lithography Inc. and Solid
Sealing Technology Inc.
