Local governments, hospitals and public schools and universities
can tap into $74 million in stimulus money to improve the energy
efficiency of their buildings and upgrade vehicle fleets.
The money, announced Thursday, is available through competitive
grants and will be administered by the New York State Research and
Development Authority through the American Recovery and Reinvestment
Act’s State Energy Program.
The program provides money for energy-efficiency improvements,
installing renewable energy systems and buying alternative-fuel vehicles.
Projects will be selected based on energy and fuel savings,
anticipated job creation/retention, emission reductions, location and
project readiness.
Grants will be awarded regionally based on need, and will use a
region’s unemployed population as a main determining factor.
The first round of applications is due Aug. 24.
Any remaining funds will be used in a second round, due Oct. 26.
